Tilings of Low-Genus Surfaces by Quadrilaterals

In contribution to the classification of all tilings of low-genus surfaces, the kaleidoscopic and non-kaleidoscopic tilings by quadrilaterals are given up to genus 12. As part of their classification, the algebraic structure of the conformal tiling groups and the geometric structure of the tiles are specified. In addition, several infinite classes of tilings and tiling groups are presented.

passivity in waiting for godot and endgame: a psychoanalytic reading

this study intends to investigate samuel beckett’s waiting for godot and endgame under the lacanian psychoanalysis. it begins by explaining the most important concepts of lacanian psychoanalysis. the beckettian characters are studied regarding their state of unconscious, and not the state of consciousness as is common in most beckett studies. according to lacan, language plays the sole role in ...

A Normal Form for Cubic Surfaces

We consider cubic surfaces with rational coefficients that contain a rational point and satisfy a certain condition regarding their coefficients. Each such cubic surface is shown to be birationally equivalent to a surface of the form z2 = f(x, y), where f(x, y) is a polynomial of degree at most 4. Our method is similar to that which Tate and Silverman used in [2] to put cubic curves into Weiers...

On normal subgroups in the fundamental groups of complex surfaces

We show that for each aspherical compact complex surface X whose fundamental group π fits into a short exact sequence 1 → K → π → π1(S) → 1 where S is a compact hyperbolic Riemann surface and the group K is finitelypresentable, there is a complex structure on S and a nonsingular holomorphic fibration f : X → S which induces the above short exact sequence. In particular, the fundamental groups o...

Normal Surfaces

We define a 2-normal surface to be one which intersects every 3-simplex of a triangulated 3-manifold in normal triangles and quadrilaterals, with one or two exceptions. The possible exceptions are a pair of octagons, a pair of unknotted tubes, an octagon and a tube, or a 12-gon. In this paper we use the theory of critical surfaces developed in [Baca] to prove the existence of topologically inte...
